The sofa is to be washed, the bathroom and kitchen are due the same day, and furniture has to pass through the building entrance. Fabric and drying: two conditions assessed together
Which method suits an upholstered set cannot be decided by looking at the stain alone. The care label is looked for first; it is usually under the seat cushion, on the back panel, or along the zip edge of the cushion cover. Assuming a method is suitable without reading the manufacturer's care instructions is not sound practice: velvet, linen blends, leather and faux leather do not respond the same way to the same treatment.
The second condition is drying. A sofa treated with a wet method dries more comfortably in a room that can be ventilated and where air can move. Where windows cannot be opened, where the room will stay closed all day, or where the sofa must remain pushed against a wall, a scope leaving less moisture can be discussed instead. Pulling the sofa away from the wall, laying cushions separately and not sitting on it that day determine much of the outcome. Why living areas and wet rooms are assessed separately
In the living room, bedroom and hallway the work is mostly about dust, surfaces and textiles; in bathrooms, toilets and kitchens limescale, grease and fittings come to the fore. Treating them as one scope misleads both the timing and the result. The practical distinction: wet rooms need water supply and drainage access, living areas need belongings cleared away. When bathroom work falls on the same day as sofa washing, order matters, since it can add to the moisture already in the air; wet-room work usually continues after the sofa has been left to dry. Passage in the entrance and on the stairs
In communal areas the real issue is not the cleaning itself but crossing a wet floor. Stairs and landings are wetted half-width or floor by floor, never all at once, and one side is not crossed until the other dries. No water goes onto a polished surface before mats and warning arrangements are set at the entrance. If a bulky item such as a sofa is to be carried, starting stair cleaning after the carrying is done is sensible for safety and avoids repeating work. Checkpoints before and after the work
- Has the care label been found and photographed?
- Can the room be ventilated and the sofa moved off the wall?
- Are water and electricity available in the wet rooms?
- Has an alternative route or time been agreed for the stairs?
- After the work, were cushion undersides and seams checked for moisture?
- Were mats and warnings removed only once the communal floor had dried?
Is the mark on the sofa a stain or fabric wear?
That distinction cannot be made without seeing it in place. Sheen on a fabric surface, a change in coating and a stain are different things; rubbing or fingernail tests at home are unreliable and may damage the surface. Assessment is made on site.
Can communal areas be cleaned on sofa washing day?
