Why soot is never wiped with a wet cloth: the surface dictates the method

In soot and smoke residue cleaning, the order of work determines the result. Soot is the oily residue of burnt material; when it meets water it spreads rather than dissolving. That is why every surface is dry-cleaned first: loose soot and dust are lifted away using vacuum and dry methods. Only then do we move on to wiping with a product suited to the surface. If the order is reversed, even a faint trace of soot can turn into a shadow that will not come out.

The type of surface changes the product, the cloth and the pressure applied. On painted walls we take account of the type and durability of the paint; on varnished wood we choose a product that will not damage the finish; on marble and natural stone we avoid products that could dull the surface; soot lifts more easily from non-porous surfaces such as glass; on plastic surfaces, however, heat and soot may have caused permanent discolouration.
