A few hours after the windows are wiped, the sun shifts and lines appear that were not visible before. Some of them are drying marks left by the cloth; others come from the glass itself. A wiping mark or a change in the surface?
Telling the two apart starts with simple observation. Marks left by wiping usually follow the direction of the cloth or squeegee: parallel, broad and regular. Wipe again and they move or disappear. Lasting flaws are independent of the wiping direction, catch the light at certain angles, and stay exactly where they are after a second pass.
It is wise not to go further than that. Whether something is a scratch, a mineral deposit or wear in a factory coating cannot be settled by eye or by touch. Methods such as running a fingernail over the pane to find which side the mark sits on are unreliable and can make matters worse. That judgement belongs to someone who works with glass or joinery. Sequencing a multi-storey home
A common mistake in a multi-storey home is doing the windows too early. Dust travels downwards; once rugs, curtains or furniture upstairs are handled, the clean glass below picks up marks again. The usual direction is top to bottom and dry work before wet work: dusting and vacuuming first, wet surfaces next, glass and frames last.
Stairs are the pressure point in that order. While they are wet, access to the upper floor is cut off, so they are often left to the end or split flight by flight to keep a route open. If there are children, elderly residents or pets in the house, this split should be agreed in advance. Access limits on glass and frames
Access is the most concrete factor defining scope. Panes that open inwards, sashes that swing fully, and windows reachable safely from a balcony fall within normal scope. Fixed large panels, exterior façade surfaces and points that would require leaning past a railing count as work at height and are not promised here.
Frames and tracks are a separate item. Tracks collect dust, sand and hardened residue, and clearing them takes longer than the glass itself. Ask in advance whether insect screens can be removed and whether the manufacturer's care instructions for painted or coated joinery are known. Checks before and after the work
- Mark, floor by floor, which panes are wiped from inside and which from outside.
- Say upfront which windows will not open or have a sticking sash.
- Walk through existing scratches and stains together before starting.
- Agree when the stairs will be wet and what the alternative route is.
- Have the joinery type and any care instructions to hand.
- After the work, check the glass from two light angles, in daylight and in the evening.
